Welcome to Rakaia Gorge Campground — your riverside escape in the heart of Canterbury.
Set beside the ever‑changing Rakaia River and surrounded by dramatic mountain views, our first‑come, first‑served campground offers classic Kiwi camping in a peaceful natural setting. As the evenings draw in, visitors get to enjoy some of the most spectacular dark skies in the region — perfect for stargazing after a day outdoors.
Please note we don’t take bookings or confirm availability in advance.
With earlier nightfall, all arrivals must now check in by 7.30pm. Please plan your travel so you can settle in safely before dark and enjoy the evening sky.
As summer winds down, from Anzac Day (25 April) the full campground closes and we reduce to 10 public sites for the winter season.
