Winter at the Rakaia Gorge is a special time: crisp alpine air, snowy mountain views, and peaceful landscapes perfect for exploring. With Mt Hutt Ski Area opening for the winter season, our campsite becomes an ideal base for skiing, snowboarding, and enjoying the alpine atmosphere. You’ll also find winter‑friendly walks, scenic lookouts, waterfalls, and nearby reserves to explore on those clear, cold days.
Winter Campsite – Open 1 May to October
$10 per adult, per night. Children under 10 stay free
Self‑service camping area (no staffed office during winter)
Freedom camping is not permitted — the campsite is monitored regularly for everyone’s safety and comfort
Choose your own site along the front of the campground — see the map for guidance
Arrive and leave anytime — no set check‑in or check‑out times
Payment is via the honesty box located at the toilet block
Ground can be wet or soft in winter — please choose your spot with care
Be mindful of space and privacy for other campers
There are no rubbish bins on-site — please take all waste with you. Recycling facilities are available in Methven
No showers are available during winter, but toilets are provided
This is a non‑powered campsite, so plan your power needs accordingly
Dogs are welcome, but must be on a lead at all times, as the campsite is a public space
No cats are permitted, to help protect our native birdlife
Our winter campsite is ideal for self‑contained motorhomes.
We provide toilets, water, and parking only — there are no showers or power hookups on-site.
Please ensure your motorhome has its own shower, power supply, and heating for a comfortable winter stay.

Located in Windwhistle (approx. 15 minutes), this loop track takes you through native bush to a beautiful waterfall. Entry fee applies.
Only 10 minutes away, this peaceful reserve at the base of Mt Hutt is perfect for short winter walks, sheltered forest, and quiet nature time.
